When I was a child, my family lived in a post-and-beam house in the country, with 14-foot ceilings in the living room. At Christmas, my dad and brothers would go out to dad’s trapline, cut down the tallest tree they could find, and haul it home. The tree-top reached the ceiling, and our entire family got involved in the decorating. One year, our cat decided to climb the tree, and of course the tree toppled over, breaking most of my mother’s cherished heirloom glass ornaments. From then on, we made sure to tie the tree to the staircase railing so it wouldn’t fall over!
