Knitting Fit for a Dog

The original title for this piece was “Practical mathematics for knitting,” but before I’d finished typing it, I could hear you yawning! Actually, I’ve wanted to write an article about math and knitting for a long time. Who would have thought a global pandemic would have created the opportunity!

While this piece does include some practical math, my aim here is to share my insights for the dog coat project in this issue. I’m not sure which you’ll find scarier: my ideas or the math!

When I was asked to create a dog coat, it took a while to think of a model. I hear dogs barking in my neighborhood all the time, but should “crazy knitting lady” really go knocking on doors at a time like this?
