Despite the warm sun during the day, spring evenings can be chilly, which is why it is always handy to have a wrap or cape to throw over your shoulders. If you are standing outside listening to the sounds of the world awakening after winter’s slumber, this project will chase away the chill.
The mitred capelet from designer Ruthie Snell of Mississauga, Ontario, will warm you up no matter what the season. Suitable for any 18/24 (“gauge talk” for 18 stitches and 24 rows in four inches of knitting) striping yarn, this project is challenging but fun, according to Ruthie, so let your imagination go wild.
“The mitring might be a challenge in this project,” Ruthie cautions, “but the shaping is beautiful because the cables and short rows help the capelet sit nicely on the shoulders. I also like the length which is a style that can easily be put on or taken off.”
Ruthie owns her own quilting and yarn shop, Ruti’s Needlebed, which doesn’t give her much time to publish her own patterns, but she will provide a pattern of her own design when customers buy yarn in her store. She says she used to publish patterns but no longer has the time to “do it properly.”
Often inspired by the yarn, Ruthie says she looks at it and can see what it should be. “I do consider what styles are in when I am designing, but I let the yarn speak to me.”
