Chevron Variations Semi-Circular Shawl

US$9.95

Beautiful, lacy, round pi shawls seem magical, but the shaping is based on geometry, not magic: the mathematical formula C = πd. That is, the circumference of a circle is equal to the diameter multiplied by pi. The inimitable Elizabeth Zimmermann realized that she could use this geometrical truth to design a circular shawl. When the circumference of a shawl (measured by the number of stitches) is doubled, the diameter (measured by the number of rows) should also double.
The Chevron Variations Semi-Circular Shawl is an adaptation of Elizabeth Zimmermann’s pi shawl knit back and forth in rows rather than in rounds, but the principle remains the same. We’ll start with just a few stitches, then double them occasionally, according to Zimmermann’s recipe, all the while adding some chevron-style stitch patterns into the tiers delineated by the increase rows.
