Baseball Fan Socks
This sock pattern from Lorraine Thompson’s Thoughtful Soles Series was inspired by the summer of 1985, the year in which Lorraine became a fan of baseball. For these socks, she used the colour of her favourite team but reversed the main and contrasting colours in the two socks to represent home and away uniforms. The words on the soles are just a taste of baseball vocabulary arranged as a cheerleader’s chant. She highlighted the first letter of each word to look like lacing on a baseball by using the embroidered duplicate stitch.
Red Legs Socks
"In this witty sock pattern, Lorraine Thompson created shaped toes to be worn on the left and right feet because the words on the soles need to be read in order. After much experimenting, it turns out you just need to decrease faster on one side than the other. She also used a band heel but with a reinforced s1,k1 pattern. This heel does not have a gusset decrease which would interrupt the colour stranding in the foot. The numbers for the heel can be adjusted. The motif on the leg is a sheep she has used time and time again on many of her knitted projects, this time she made the sheep design taller with coloured legs to represent socks. On the soles of the socks are the colour-stranded words: On the eighth day God knit socks. Includes: material list, instructions, charts for colour stranding. Skill level: Advanced
Mars Jars Socks
"This is the 15th sock pattern in Lorraine Thompson’s Thoughtful Soles Series. It’s a hand-knitted sock pattern inspired by Carl Sagan’s book Cosmos and the experiment to test the possibility of life on Mars. The question, ‘Is there Life on Mars’ is knitted into the sole of one sock and question marks on the other. Elongated figures of possible aliens run across the leg of the socks. Colourwork charts included.

Smooth Sailing Socks
Hand knitted sock pattern with a serene nautical scene running up the calf and the words A Good Day / To Sail Away knitted into each sole respectively.
This is the 14th sock pattern in Lorraine Thompson’s Thoughtful Soles Series where she was inspired by the waves in the sea and the prettiest sailboats, using colour stranding technique.
It is a pleasure, she commented, working with such luscious yarns like Universal Yarn Bella Cash and Fibra Natura Donnina yarns, it makes the process that much more gratifying.

Sunflower Socks
Hand knitted socks pattern with a sunflower running up the calf and the words Be a Flower and Stretch in the Sun knitted into each sole respectively. This is the 13th sock pattern in Lorraine Thompson’s Thoughtful Soles Series where she was inspired by one of the mindfulness magazines she admired. It had a full-page photo of a field of sunflowers with the following caption. “When you are busy, it is calming to remember that somewhere out there is a vast field of flowers just stretching in the sun.” Knitting these socks is her tribute to that bit of advice and working with such luscious yarns like Universal Yarn Bella Cash and Donnina makes it easier to be mindful. Fractured Flower Trivet
This trivet design is the culmination of the last several Knit Together articles: the adaptation of the flower in Issue 57 Creative Options in Knitting, the striped I-cord from Issue 58 Edgy Knitting, and the double-knitting piece Fractured Flower Trivet that follows in this issue.
