The Straw Pavouk Talisman, Hanging Reversible Ornament

At the start of each New Year, Belarusan families gather to craft the Straw Spider, or Salamiany Pavouk. This traditional talisman, made using straw, thread, and the Nizanka embroidery technique, is believed to protect homes from negative forces. Crafting it is a fun family activity, often compared to building with Lego or completing a puzzle. The Straw Pavouk’s geometric design symbolizes the divine structure of the Universe. Traditionally hung from ceilings or above cribs, it reflects Belarusan culture and history. Inspired by classic woven patterns, modern versions aim to capture the natural look of straw through careful colour choices.
This embroidery method is called Nizanka and the project can be created using any of your favourite colours. The “”Turning Rows”” method, running and blanket stitches are used for this design.
