[/hcolumns] Elizabeth has always loved knitting and she became a knitwear designer when she was home caring for her children. “I was a knitting teacher first and I knit models for some of the Toronto yarn stores,” she explains. “Then, I began designing for Shelridge Farm.”
Designing is a “picture process” for Elizabeth as she first likes to imagine where the piece will be worn and who will wear it. Once she has that vision, she can create the design. The shawl she is presenting to A Needle Pulling Thread knitters was inspired by the city of Barrie and the Spirit Catchers, a local tourist attraction. She is a very focussed designer and when a project doesn’t look the same on the needles as it did in her vision, she rips it out and starts over sometimes changing aspects until the “vision” comes clear. “I keep trying until I enjoy what I am doing and then I know it is becoming what I want,” Elizabeth explains.
The leap into opening a shop seemed like the next challenge she needed and Eliza’s Buttons and Yarn was born. She likes to use good quality buttons in her work so she stocks fair trade buttons from India.
