Folk Flowers Table Mat
This attractive table mat features a beautiful floral design using sewing machine free motion couching embroidery techniques in the traditional Ukrainian folk style. The deep red colour yarn used for the embroidery gives the design a bold and striking look, while keeping the delicate and intricate details of the flowers. Using the same colour yarn throughout results in a charming monochromatic design that showcases the beauty and complexity of traditional Ukrainian embroidery.
The overall effect of the Folk Flowers Table Mat is one of traditional beauty and elegance. It adds a touch of culture and history to any table setting and is sure to impress guests or bring the everyday pleasure of decoration.
The overall process is free motion couching using a sewing machine guided by the traced design. You can also couch by hand if you prefer. The basic process is to use a couching foot on your sewing machine and the free motion technique to embroider the design. The top thread is the same colour as the yarn and the bobbin thread is the same colour as the backing.

Always a Dreamer Wall Art
Inspired by the essence of The Little Prince, written by the French aristocrat, writer, and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Olesya Lebedenko created wall art pinkeep with the little prince and his doves. It’s a little piece of fine work of appliqué, embroidery, and hand sewing. The wall art is made solid by using cardboard and some paint is used to make the prince’s eye. finished measurements 6¼” x 6¼” [15.9 x 15.9 cm]

The Rabbit on the Moon Wall Quilt
This appliquéd wall quilt was inspired by the story about the image of a rabbit on the moon told by many cultures around the world. This story speaks to Nancy Devine about friendship, perseverance, and the sacrifices we sometimes make to help others realize a dream. Nancy used some glow-in-the-dark star fabric to create the night sky, and a scrap of treasured green fabric from her stash to create her vision of when Rabbit first dreams of a plan to travel to the moon. Other stash treasures include vintage daisy trim, various decorative and special-effect threads, and a great deal of experimentation with her sewing machine’s decorative stitches. Using products like Sulky Blendables, Sulky Solvy Water Soluble Stabilizer, Flatter Smoothing Spray, Sew Easy Thicker Freezer Paper, Odif 505 Temporary Spray Adhesive. Finished measurements 24” x 18¼” [61 x 46.5cm]

The Sky’s the Limit Tote Bag
The astronomy theme for this issue reminded Betty Biberdorf of a phrase she shares with her granddaughter when she leaves to go home. They exchange phrases: “I love you to the moon and back” and the other answers, “I love you more than all the stars in the sky”. Inspired by special moments like these, Betty created a tote bag for when her granddaughter sleeps over. With the use of the breakthrough features on my PFAFF® creative icon™ 2 sewing and embroidery machine she incorporated the Northern Lights, stars, and a bright moon along with the special phrases. This is an intermediate project with step by step instructions on how to work the tote bag on the creative icon™ 2. Photos included. finished measurement approximately 18” [46cm] square

The Ceramic Mosaic Bag
Originally from Kyiv, quilting artist Olesya Lebedenko was inspired by tilework motifs created in 1968 by Ukrainian artists Oleksandr Vorona and Yuriy Ilchenko. All ceramics were created by a third artist Opanas Redko. The techniques used for creating the tiles were ‘maiolica’ and ceramic mosaic. In this project, Olesya uses similar colours and shapes to recreate Ukrainian tilework. The ombre colours of these fabrics give a lovely shading and 3-D effect. Includes: the material list, instructions, templates, and order of stitching, amazing step-by-step instruction photos. Finished measurements 11” x 1¾” x 7 ¾” [28 x 4.5 x 9.5cm]

De Morgan Project Pouch
This project pouch celebrates the historical designs of William De Morgan and the value of the handmade. The lustre of silk fabrics and rayon threads was chosen to provide richness and tactility that aim to honour his work. The front panel appliqué builds the colourful design motifs inspired by his florals and foliage. Free motion embroidery adds practical and decorative stitched details. The pouch is lightly quilted and lined and closes with a zipper. The project can also be made in your choices of colours/materials, such as mid-weight cotton, linen, or wool. Includes material list, instructions, templates, instruction photos. Finished measurements 12” x 12” x ½” [30.5 x 30.5 x 1.27cm]

Modern Sundial Table Topper
For Betty Biberdorf, Moroccan tiles quickly jumped to mind for this issue envisioning appliqué and embroidery combined. Once she completed her design, the Modern Sundial emerged! Betty wanted to create a tile design that incorporated basic geometric shapes that were also larger than would fit in a 260 mm embroidery hoop – the largest width the DESIGNER RUBY™ 90 uses. This table topper then was created a quarter of the design for one hooping, then four parts are sewn together. The larger design could be used as a wall quilt, table topper or cushion cover. While the mySewnet™ PLATINUM Software was used to create the Modern Sundial embroidery, the image created in the Draw and Paint module may also be used as an appliqué pattern for creating the sundial tile. This article is an overview of how the Modern Sundial was created and not a pattern. Finished designs can be downloaded from mySewnet.com. If you wish to digitize your design the image is provided. Includes full material list including sewing feet, instructions on how to accomplish this pattern using HUSQVARNA® VIKING® DESIGNER RUBY™ 90 sewing and embroidery machine. Finished Measurements 26¾” x 26¾” [68 x 68cm]

Little Mermaid Doll
The inspiration for this project is from one of Olesya’s favourite fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. Olesya created the mermaid doll inspired by one of her friend’s daughters named Anna, a talented diving instructor. Olesya is happy to share with you the step-by-step tutorial to create your mermaid or you can use the pattern as a template to appliqué on a quilt block, a beach tote, or a cushion cover.
Includes: material list, instructions, templates, and order of stitching, amazing step-by-step instruction photos
finished measurements 5” x 17” [12.7 x 44cm]

Muskoka Lumbar Cushion
The motivation for comfort combined with the nautical flags and quilt blocks created the inspiration for the Muskoka Lumbar Cushion. For example, the Alpha flag is based on the flying geese block, the Foxtrot flag is a square in a square block while the Whiskey flag is a log cabin block. This project is fun to make and equally as fun to enjoy in comfortable Muskoka chairs. The waterproofing finish, applied with HeatnBond Liquid Vinyl, allows you to leave the cushions out on the chairs even in light rain without the rain soaking through!
Includes: material list, step-by-step instructions, diagrams for constructing the blocks and assembling the cushion top, order of stitching
Finished Measurements 19” x 11” [48 x 28cm]

Repurposed Pottery Pin Cushions
These pincushions are based on a long ago summer camp craft project. Back then, we used empty frozen juice cans.
I found these pottery pieces on a trip to a local thrift store for less than $1. You can use cups and saucers too. Just glue the cup to the saucer with some seriously strong glue. The saucer can corral stray buttons, a bobbin or two, or provide a resting place for scissors.
Create these Re-purposed Pottery Pincushions for yourself, a few of your stitching pals, or for sale at a fundraising bazaar.
