Sardinian Knot Stitch Snowflake Ornament
Sardinian Knot Stitch Snowflake Ornament
This counted thread embroidery style, called Punt’e Nù (poont-ay-new) in Sardinian, comes from the town of Teulada (tay-oo-lah-dah), which is located along the southern coastline of the Italian island of Sardinia. It’s done exclusively in the town and not taught to outsiders often. The technique uses knots to create sets of traditional geometric designs in high relief on only the vertical threads of the fabric. Designed by Jeanine Robertson italian-needlework.blogspot.com

You Had Me at …Woof!
You Had Me at …Woof!
Working with over-dyed floss is always fun – the trick is to complete both legs of each stitch as you go, so the colour changes flow through the design. The direction you stitch (horizontal or vertical) can change the entire look of a piece! In this design and the one featured in our nwext issue (Spring 2015) Jo Gatenby used floss colours that remind us of the animals they represent – and how cute is that paw print fabric? These nifty hot pads are quite an oxymoron! Since when is a snowflake able to resist the heat?! When they’re crochet of course. Consider starching them for home décor. Designed by Laura Gebhardt [email protected]

Jack Frost Scarf
Jack Frost Scarf
With Carla's request for a beaded scarf project, came the perfect opportunity for combining beads with knit lace using a technique that adds beads during the knitting process. No pre-stringing is required for this style of beaded knit. A fine crochet hook that fits into the hole in the bead is used to pull the bead onto the yarn stitch. After some experimenting, the Jack Frost scarf was created. Designed by Brenda Franklin www.bfdesigns.on.ca

You’ve Got to Move It, Move It Knitted Tie 2
You’ve Got to Move It, Move It Knitted Tie
This knitted tie has both a certain charm and a sense of humour. Inspired by some left over variegated yarn, I thought a knitted tie would tie in perfectly in a winter issue. As I was knitting it up, it quickly occurred to me how it looked so much like the tail of a Ring-tailed Lemur. Before I knew it, I had visions of King Julien XIII shaking it to the hit song, I Like to Move It, Move It, from the movie Madagascar. Designed by Lynn Swanson

Dragon’s Tail Scarf
The Dragon’s Tail Scarf
When I knit something for someone, I want to make sure that the pattern I choose for them reflects their personality. I couldn’t imagine knitting the item without knowing what their favourite colour is either. In 2011 I decided to make a scarf for each of my girlfriends of the Soccer Moms Club – it’s not an actual club. Although our boys stopped playing rep soccer long ago, we still get together to enjoy each other’s company. I found the perfect scarf pattern for each of the ‘girls’, but couldn’t find one that suited my friend Judy perfectly, despite my search. Since her cultural background is Asian, I thought of the dragon and the colour red, and came up with the Dragon Tail Scarf, which sports an awesome cable. Sometimes, when you can’t find the pattern you want, you just have to sit down and create it yourself. Designed by Carla A. Canonico

Purple in Winter Wonderland - front view
Purple in Winter Wonderland
This pattern can be made in either sock/ fingering/ light weight yarn or lace weight yarn. A lace yarn will produce a looser, more open tension than light/ sock yarn. The panels have little or no ease; they are designed to stretch to fit the shape of your figure. Designed by Anna Stoklosa www.creative-design-art.com/creative-knitting
